2018 - Day 5

Leona and I slept in a little this morning, rolling out of bed around 6:45. The skies were gray again this morning, and after checking the weather, it looked like we were going to get wet. We ate breakfast, and tried to be fast, but Mike the maintenance man and I kept chatting. The rain waited until we got under the canopy at the gas station, and then the skies opened. I got the bike fuelled up, and my rain pants on, and then we were off.

It was a rough first half hour, with the rain coming down heavily. The rain backed off a little for a while, but shortly it became a downpour. It became very hard to see, and when the hail started I pulled off the interstate and found a hotel canopy to park under. There was a Denny's right beside the Best Western we pulled into, so Leona and I went to enjoy some coffee and warm up.

Our ride started at 8, at 9 we pulled over, and then by 10 we were back on the road. For the next hour and a half it kept raining, mostly light rain but coming down heavily for short stretches a few times. Just across the Illinois state line we turned into a rest stop, finally getting past the weather system. It was 11:30, and for the rest of the day we didn't see another drop. From 12 degrees in the morning, to 30 in the afternoon, we got a little bit of everything today.

After entering Illinois we just rode for the rest of the day, not much for scenery once again, besides a ton of corn fields. We are getting used to sitting on the bike a little more, not getting quite as sore as we have been. I've been struggling with a sore back for the last month or a little more, but it's holding up pretty well. We got into Effingham, IL around 5:30. We checked into a hotel, and took their recommendation for dinner.

Skies this morning, just before leaving Tomah, WI

Hanging out and waiting for the rain to end. This was after it had almost stopped raining, though we got lots after this yet

Rest stop to get out of the rain gear. Looked and smelled fresh here!

Artsy picture taken by my wife, she's in the mirror

I really like capturing a few photos like this, with the green signs that guide the way, and Leona got a good one for me here

Corn field, that's the crop of choice in this area

Had a nice rest in the shade of this tree

If you're ever in Effingham, this is the place to eat

12 ounce ribeye was the special on this Wednesday evening, and there was nothing left on this plate once I was done. The food here was amazing!
