2018 - Day 20

After getting some breakfast, fuel for the bike, and some water we were back on the road this morning. We did a little bit of the Moonshiner 28 the other day on the way to Deals Gap and the plan for today was to ride out the rest of it to where it ends in South Carolina. The skies were cloudy all day, minus a few times where the sun poked out for a few minutes.

The Moonshiner 28 is one of the best roads I've ridden here. It's a long ride too, with corners that just don't stop coming. It's got some really tight sections, some that are a little more relaxed, and even a few straight stretches to catch my breath. I said this to Leona as we were riding, I've done more corners in the last 8 days than I'll do for the rest of the year and it's probably not even close. Over that time we've only done 2,500km, but it's all been back roads at 35-55mph. There simply isn't a better area for riding I've seen anywhere else in North America, it is purely a motorcycle riders heaven on earth! Total trip mileage so far is exactly 8,000km at the end of today.

As the Moonshiner was starting to near it's end we passed into Georgia, where we spent the next 14 minutes, before crossing into South Carolina. The Moonshiner ends in Walhalla, SC but we rode on to Seneca, SC where we stopped for a snack. Back in the saddle we headed west and eventually back into Georgia. Wish we had time to see more of South Carolina but I guess that will have to wait until another time.

We got into Helen, GA by mid afternoon and got checked into the hotel. The weather kept looking worse so we stayed in town rather than heading up into the mountains to run the Six Gap ride. Leona and I walked down to the Chattahoochee River. We were both singing or humming the Alan Jackson song, and it's kind of neat to be able to see the river in real life. There was a BBQ joint just down the street, and man was that a great meal. The skies were still dark so unfortunately I won't ride Six Gap today. We will do that in the morning on our way out, as we do have a little extra time.

Tomorrow we start making our way back home, through a lot of new country just to keep it fresh. It's still going to be an awesome ride I'm sure but the thought of this vacation winding down is a little sad. There's so much we could still do down here, it would be easy to spend another few weeks or even a month down here. This whole area has history that goes back so far compared to where we are from, and a lot of the history has always been fascinating. We haven't even had time to get into any of the Civil War stuff at all.

I really hope this isn't the last time we come here, because we can't say enough good things about the area and especially the people. Everyone we meet has been awesome, so hospitable and friendly. People love that we've come here all the way from Alberta on the bike, we've gotten a ton of comments when they see the license plate. It has easily been my favourite bike trip so far, without a doubt!

Too bad the helmet is in the way, but look how lush and green that is. The picture is totally un-edited

Curves on the Moonshiner 28

More curves

And still some more curves

A few more just in case you're not getting it yet;)

Well that isn't curves. We were able to walk underneath, and it was pretty cool (not really, I was pouring sweat by the time we had walked back up to the bike)

Way down yonder on the Chattahoochee...oh never mind, it's just a 2 minute walk from the hotel!

I had some sick ribs at this joint, Leona had a pig melt sandwich. Dinner was some of the best I've had on the trip, the baked beans were killer

Keeps looking worse every day, this is the price I paid for keeping our bike upright when we almost had the collision the other day. It could have been so much worse, so I'll gladly take this!
