2018 - Day 19

We started the day off with gray skies once again, though they burned off pretty soon and we had sunny skies again. It got very warm again today, the highest the feels like temperature I saw was 39. Up in the mountains it cooled off a very little bit, only to heat up as we got down into the valleys.

The ride through the National Park was beautiful, though the closer we got to Gatlinburg, TN the busier it became. Gatlinburg was crazy busy, and we couldn't get out of there fast enough. We've spent so much time in the middle of nowhere, that cities just aren't very much fun. We passed by Dollywood, which looked very busy as well.

After lunch we headed back into North Carolina, to the tiny town of Hot Springs where we jumped on highway 209, a 24 mile section that's called the Rattler in these parts. The curves were very tight, really a little too tight at times, it was hard to get in a rhythm. There are also many driveways off of the road and a lot of gravel in the corners, so I don't know if I'd recommend this road.

We got hit with a small but decent shower just before we got to the quilt shop Leona wanted to stop at. I sat outside and chatted with the owners husband while Leona browsed. With that done we headed into Maggie Valley for dinner. After satisfying our hunger we got back on the bike and rode the half hour or so stretch of road back to Bryson City.

Tomorrow we'll ride the Moonshiner 28 to where it ends in South Carolina, and then head west into Georgia to ride the North Georgia Six Gap roads. We'll spend the night and then the long journey home begins, though it's going to be the long way to just see some new country as we head north.

Took the Newfound Gap road (441) to Gatlinburg, TN to start the day

Some great views of the Smokey Mountains this morning

Not sure I would recommend this road, too many driveways and gravel on the road, had to be super vigilant

My wife got to visit a quilt shop in North Carolina, while I talked with the owners husband. It should have been her in the picture though
